January 30, 2007
I’ve put together a tutorial on how to shoot a time-lapse using a DSLR and intevelometer. The tutorial covers everything from settings you should use to making the time-lapse video in quicktime.
Let me know if the tutorial was useful. I’ll try and do some more tutorials if this one is recieved well. Also, if you’ve made a time-lapse, post a link to it in the comments.

Travels to Djibouti
January 29, 2007
Ok, here's something back in the realm of journalism:
Chris Tyree of the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot traveled to Djibouti in the Horn of Africa to cover U.S. military efforts to stem the growth of terrorism. The Pilotonline.com put together a multimedia package of his work: Waging Peace
Roger Richards, a pioneer newspaper video shooter and one of the instructors for the Platypus workshop, put the show together in Final Cut using Tyree's audio from the trip.

IN MY LANGUAGE by silentmiaow

Haunting, beautiful, inspirational. Points out the beauty and importance of video and the ability to share content on the internet. It’s long. It’s not for everybody. Stick with it and I know you will be enlightened by the end.
Also, take heart, less bizarre multimedia links can be found under the Notable Multimedia links on the side-bar. This is less a multimedia piece than a human story that could provide multimedia shooters inspiration on how to tell a video story. Finally, There are a few more folks from the multimedia team who are coming on-line to share their observations and perspectives. So if you are getting tired of my ‘artsy-fartsy’ posts, hold-on help is coming. Meanwhile, enjoy.

p.s. Zach Wise is going to post a fun tutorial on the use of time-lapse photography and I’m working on a video compression tutorial.

MultimediaShooter Podcast - Richard Koci-Hernandez Interview Part 1
January 25, 2007
Here is part one of an interview I recorded with MultimediaShooter founder Richard Koci-Hernandez. Richard has been shooting photos for the San Jose Mercury News for more than a decade, and has recently transitioned into a multimedia shooter and producer for the paper. He has a great backstory and a lot to say about the past, present and future of newspaper multimedia.
On a technical note this was recorded with a Marantz PMD 660 and a M-Audio Aries condensor microphone. It was edited with a combination of Audacity and Garage Band, and the music was provided by my friend and former bandmate forbidden donut. I learned an interesting lesson while recording this. A cell phone receiving a call near a recorder can cause a nasty clipping in your audio, so turn off your cell phone when recording.
Hope you enjoy,

SLEEPERS by chrisgubbels
January 25, 2007
SLEEPERS has been around a while, guess I missed it, but I really think it deserves more than a mention. This is one of those inspirational pieces- for my taste anyway - that just makes you feel like you've had the wind knocked out of you. It's a great idea, executed with artistry. It has an unexpected nature and yes the audio has it's problems - too low and lots of hiss - but still…..hope you enjoy. Please feel free to comment and leave links to pieces that inspire you.

January 21, 2007
Tired of using the same Garageband loop in the background? Need some sound of a couple fighting in Russian? Well that wouldn't be ethical, but you'd be surprised at the royalty free sound out there. Below are a few places to start if you don't want to create your own music or effects for your next multimedia project.

8 Days, The Pulp, The BBC, and you.
January 19, 2007
8 Days In eight days, 9 journalists from regional newspapers in the UK will attempt what appears near impossible. Armed with small lightweight high definition cameras they'll begin shooting their own news stories. What's going on? videojournalist and course leader, David Dunkley Gyimah, says you decide.
The Pulp was created out of a desire to push the limits of multimedia documentary stories. The short answer is that we want to create and produce material, collaborate with others, and change the landscape of online storytelling.
Press Gazette - UK Journalism News and Journalism Jobs The BBC Training site launches with 500 pages and over 40 video clips with both practical exercises, how-to guides helping journalists of all levels to improve their skills, and theoretical discussions on the practice of journalism aimed to stimulate debate.
