May 31, 2007
Some of these I've mentioned before, but maybe you missed them and who couldn't use another list of cool stuff in their life. Here are some new, cool, and old tools that Joe Weiss and I came up with as a reference for the NPPA Multimedia Immersion Workshop. Read more

Poor man’s notes from NPPA
May 31, 2007

Another report from NPPA Immersion Workshop. Apple is featuring a link to an article about the workshop written by Donald R. Winslow, here.
At the Summit blog, there is a great link to audio tips, by two of the best audio slide show producers around, check it out here.
Finally, if you want my 'brain dump', keep reading. It is just a strange list of observations and snippets from the speakers. Some of it makes no sense, but I think that's kinda fun! It leaves it up to you to do some thinking, rather than have me preach to you. Enjoy! Read more

HDVIDEOPRO magazine, Join the Media Circus, A reporter’s perspective, Media that Matters Film festival and Friday fun with Backspace
May 25, 2007
You wouldn't know it buy the cover, but this looks to be a very promising magazine for those of us who've bought the HD Snake Oil that David Leeson is selling.
My apologies to the women in the crowd to for this magazines' blatant pandering to the male, electronic geek, Battlestar Galactica watching, only pick up a magazine with a sexy woman on the cover, side of us. And yes I am all of those things, but the premier issue, on newsstands now is worth picking up, it's got a great article about HD photojournalism with some full page HD frame grabs, nice.

Slide shows: they're not just for photographers
Ron Sylvester a new blogger on the scene, give him a try.
After 30 years in journalism, covering just about every beat in the newsroom, I jumped at the opportunity to create multimedia reports for Kansas.com. Like many others in the industry I'm DIY. I have benefited immensely from others who blog as they learn. I've found many come from a photo/visual background. I decided to chronicle my learning as a reporter going into this new area.

The Pitchman: Frame Grabs
David Leeson says it's time to move forward. This is our chance to rise up and lead the world.
Want to know a simple truth regarding me? I'm sick of talking about frame grabs.
I can almost hear the cheers nationwide from die-hard 35mm users, who have grumbled about my support of using high definition video cameras to obtain frame grabs. I think the problem I've faced as I've presented my views about video and stills is that it's easy to ignore. After all, most of you are using still cameras on assignments.

The cat is out of the bag, Joe Weiss and Soundslides, making Ken Burns fans all over the world happy!
May 23, 2007
I've been subtle about it for a while, making you read between the lines, but Andrew Dolph sent me a link to a show he produced using the NEW Beta version of Soundslides. I guess Joe couldn't take all the requests for the Ken Burns effect, he finally went to the dark side and made it a feature, along with some other very cool ones, which you'll just have to see for yourself, enjoy! Thanks for the link Andrew!

TRUTH with a camera, in more ways than one…

Some 'truth' going on here. Make sure you see this piece in the upper left corner, I highlighted the icon above. Bravo!

Just see this, it's a great piece of journalism and multimedia. One of the times, that the voice of the photographer works, not to mention the ambient sound is subtle but there. I wish they had played it up a bit more…….

Remember that thing called reading? A few good reads from Apple on audio, Transom, CJR, Mother Jones and Mindy McAdams
May 21, 2007
Quick links to some recent fine internet reading:
-
Telling Stories with Sound By Elise Malmberg This article is the first in a series exploring how audio can be integrated with other media to create richer, more dynamic journalistic features on news websites and beyond.
- The Transom Review Alex Blumberg is a producer at This American Life, responsible for many great radio stories, and he's also a wonderful explainer (see his manifesto below). He and his class are setting up shop on Transom to sort out the basic, important stuff that somehow tends to get overlooked in radio journalism, like what makes a good story and what doesn't.

If the networks and the Pentagon hate it, 'Hometown Baghdad' is surely must-see TV
