Video WILL NOT save newspapers, this WILL, MSNBC on gathering audio, New FCP book, New slideshow tool for the PC, and much more, almost too much
June 22, 2007
Worried about our future, me too. but then I saw this:
NYTLABS? Who knew? I believe this kind of stuff will save use, not video. The video hype is just that, hype, remember the hype about blogs, citizen-journalism and user generated content. Those didn't save or kill us did they? This and compelling content that users can interact with, is what will survive and be our savior.

Film Storytelling vs. Radio Storytelling…an Example
These days, newspaper reporters carry microphones and radio producers carry cameras. Everybodys scrambling to get on the multimedia bandwagon. We can debate whether this convergence is value-added or watered-down, but its certainly a trend.

sections. You can apply for the traditional "become a better still
photographer and story teller", or spend the week working as a picture
editor - editing said photographers work, or, and NEW this year, become a
better online story teller using stills, audio and video. This new media
seminar is considered an advanced workshop. It is not a software training
ground but really will be comprised of some great coaches mentoring the
student on the process of gathering better new media stories. So some
experience in the necessary software is mandatory.

Great work by the Houston Chronicle’s John McClain, who interviewed some Houston Texan football players and put together this video that shows just how silly the NFL’s draconian rules about online video use really are. You can only use brief clips of interviews, and the whole thing can’t exceed 45 seconds (which it does, anyway). The Texans play right along, which is really interesting considering it’s NFL policy we’re talking about. Even the team’s owner, Bob McNair, plays along. Interesting note: The YouTube version of this has already been taken down. (Thanks Jesse!)
