Katherine Hayes the Photography Intern, The Washington Times, has two nice multimedia pieces on her website, Diagnosing Love, Energy, and Monumental Stories, both well-done and worth your time. I love the mirror time-lapse in Diagnosing Love, Energy. Enjoy.

Infinite OZ-some!

Total 5 star eye-candy! Tin Man, the miniseries coming soon to the sci-fi channel is a sometimes psychedelic, often twisted and always bizarre take on The Wizard of Oz.

Great Advice

October 28, 2007

andrewdevigal1.jpgAndrew DeVigal, multimedia editor for The New York Times, told the Flying Short Course audience about the fundamental building blocks of multimedia storytelling: still images, and audio. “Audio is the low-hanging fruit of multimedia,” DeVigal said. “It’s the easiest, cheapest thing you can add on to photographs to start building multimedia slideshows and to learn.” DeVigal talked about just how adding audio to still photographs improved the quality of storytelling, and about how the key words for teams producing multimedia stories are “communication” and “collaboration.”"The key is to pick the right story, one that makes the best audio story,” DeVigal said. “Ask yourself these questions: Are there strong characters? Is there a strong narrative? Is it artistic? Is there emotion? Are you taking a specific angle to tell the story from, rather than being an overview? Are the subjects ‘good talkers’? Sometimes the audio can be the driving force, the spine of the story, that’s independent from the images.”

DeVigal point out that resources for learning how to do multimedia are available on the Web, including at www.newsu.org.

“Start small!” he said. “And use the ethics with audio that you use in photography. Use only the audio that you gathered during the actual reporting process.”

vii multimedia

Head over to the vii multimedia site for a few must see multimedia stories. In particular check out Road Works by Antonin Kratochvil, Kids and Money by Lauren Greenfield and any of the pieces by Alexandra Boulat. Her photography and journalism will truly be missed, and the work on stories about women in the middle east or hip hop in Palestine, will make you realize what a tragic loss the world suffered from her recent death.

Reporting for Duty

Photographer David Carson and Elie Gardner from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch just wrapped up a project about basic training that includes solid audio, video, photos, stories, etc. I was most impressed by the clean desing and interface.

I know we learned a lot working on it, and I hope others can learn from viewing it - whether it be about journalism, storytelling or basic training. -Elie Gardner
