Ok, this should put-to-bed the debate about the future of photojournalism.

I checked my del.icio.us links this morning and Zach Wise had flooded the place with the work of Ohio University School of Visual Communication photojournalism students. All I can say is "we are in good hands." Just a quick look at these blogs and you'll see that our visual culture has created a new breed of photojournalist:

There is a wealth of insight, inspiration and creativity here. I thought I was just going to find a few links to share, but they're all worth a mention. Hat's off to their guru, Bruce Strong. Strong has a killer new website of his work as well, just click his name.

I recently sent my Edirol in for repair because the input jack was 'broken." I've come to find that their should be a recall. Several of our staffers are reporting the same problem of loose then broken input jacks. I did some digging and foound this being said on the net:

"This is not a good situation, and Roland should be ashamed of continuing producing this otherwise EXCELLENT deck with such a flaw that is avoidable if using the correctly designed input jacks IN THE FIRST PLACE!

Product recall to really fix this, and/or unlimited parts/labor warranty extension on the input jacks breaking seems the right thing to do at this time.

WARNING!!!

Do NOT use SD cards over 2GB with the R-09"

Nice article here

I've been told that they fixed the problem in their new models, the Red and White models. Beware, send them into Edirol and demand they fix it for free! That's what we're doing.

Canon have just released the latest version of their S series of hybrid still/video cameras, the S5IS. Damn, we're getting close. Stereo mics! One touch switch from stills to video! I want one! Bonus, It's shaped like an old school still camera!

I had to train some reporters how to use video this week and during my research found a pretty good Video 101 site, cheese factor is high, but the principals are solid. And a nice catch from Angela Grant, http://masteringvideography.com/ a few god editing tuts here.

The S5IS is essentially the same as the S3IS – which I use now. It’s a minor upgrade. Save yourself a few bucks and pick up an S3IS whilst you can. It’s lightweight and affordable – priced at around $400 Canadian.

The S3IS delivers stellar video (with stereo sound) that is comparable to a lot of 1 chip mini dv camcorders.

The ability to switch from stills to video in an instance is a great feature for multimedia journalists.

does it have any mic inputs?

05.10.07

No mic inputs. But the audio is superb…no noise from handling the camera and the audio is picked up well even if your subject
is several feet from you.

dude, can you post or send me some examples of the sound? really, no handling noise?

Actually, the addition of a hot shoe IS a big deal, though maybe not worth the $100+ price premium the 5 is getting over the 3. Maybe the 4X video length over the 3, DIGIC III V II, larger sensor, larger LCD, etc…all add up to a pretty good upgrade.

am i misled here? will the new one have mic input? i read it somewhere but didn’t see it in the specs….plus tnxs for those examples, i’m surprised at the quality, not bad…..
