Now that I have your attention, it's time give the site a little update from Poynter, where the NPPA multimedia contest judging is taking place. If you're looking for results, wrong place. But,  if you're looking for a judges (mine) notes and impressions, and a quick tutorial on HOW TO WIN A MULTIMEDIA CONTEST then you've come to the right place. Of course there are no guarantees you'll win any contest, but I think it might help push your entries to the top of the pile.

Mike, SWEET 16, is just a starting point, to get folks thinking about editing, which is quickly becoming the LOST art of multimedia. The main point is edit tight. And thumbnails, yeah, I think it’s good to give the user this options, judges seem to like that option in presentations.

Why 16? Why put limitations on the number of photos for a slide show?

Audio slide shows and other multimedia productions are a new medium, why are we already rushing to put limits on what they can be? The content and power of the message should dictate volume or length. This new medium allows us to throw out old processes and tear down the barriers of print constraints.

A bad production is what it is, a bad production. Editing does need to be very concise, that is a fact. Just like most everything else though, rules are made to be broken.

It has been suggested several times on this site to open up your minds and be creative. Let’s not already put chains on the creative process by stating that productions should only be a certain number of minutes or a maximum number of photographs.

Or, I could be completely misled. I’m not looking to pick a fight. I just believe we have a grand opportunity to communicate messages in an entirely new form, in any way we feel tells that message powerfuly and completely.

THE MAIN POINT AS WITH ANY GOOD STORY, CINEMA, JOURNALISM, NOVELS, ETC, GREAT EDITING SKILLS ARE WHAT MAKE WONDERFUL STORIES STRONGER AND ACHIEVE THEIR INTENDED IMPACT. ONE OF THE MAJOR IMPRESSIONS THE JUDGES ARE HAVING IS THE MAJOR LACK OF EDITING IN ALMOST ALL PIECES. IN MY OPION THERE IS A MAJOR SENSE THAT WE AS VISUAL JOURNALISTS ARE VOMITING OUR ENTIRE AUDIO AND IMAGE TAKES INTO AUDIO SLIDE SHOWS AND CALLING THEM STORIES. THERE ARE A GOOD NUMBER OF VISUAL JOURNALISTS WHO ARE TELLING GREAT MULTIMEIDA PIECES WITH LOTS OF IMAGES AND LONG AUDIO, BUT THEY ARE EDITED WELL IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN—————-

PUT IT THIS WAY, WE ARE ALREADY HERE FOR ONE FULL WEEK JUDGING THIS CONTEST AND WE ARE BEHIND RIGHT NOW. THE NUMBER OF ENTRIES KEEPS GROWING EVERY YEAR. THERE HAVE TO BE RESTRICTIONS.
