Before you all head over to set me “straight,” at least take the time to read this follow-up post first.

Dare I say it but I agree with Owens. I often get 1/3 of the way through a audio + stills slide show and think the journalist used the wrong tool. The bottom line in my mind is audio + stills is a stop-gap until newspapers finally bite the bullet and start hiring video journalists and the paradigm shift from news “paper” to news “organization” happens. It’s currently cheaper and easier to crank out audio + stills using existing resources while continuing to feed the print product.

Thanks, Bob … but it’s not easier and cheaper. Just ask Bakersfield. Nothing is easier and cheaper than a point-and-shoot and a quick post of video.

Well, let’s hope that’s not where we’re headed but after reading this last month I’m afraid some of us are already there:

Howard Owens says: >

But Bakersfield — and lots of other papers — have both horrible quality and horrible numbers. I can’t see using them as examples of success. You can’t pay the bills with 600 hits a day. (But they do have a great video player.)

SoundSlides done with good photography can be tremendously compelling. SoundSlides done with bad photography and bad audio is as dreadful as bad video. We can’t save newspapers with either one.

woops. This thing takes out carat marks.

Owen’s quote about Bakersfield was removed; the above post is all mine. I was responding to Media Blog’s comment about Bakersfield and point and shoots above.

believe me, by the numbers, readers visit and comment on our multimedia (SS and videos) because they recognized good photography/photojournalism. I know this because, they say so themselves. quality images, moving or not, always come-out on top.

You’re wrong on both points, Chuck.
